ONE thing that comes out clearly in the Exim policy is that the Commerce and industry Minister, Mr Murasoli Maran, has realised the national economic importance of exports.
It is either export or perish. And, with this in mind, the Exim policy has tried to do whatever possible to facilitate exports, according to Mr P.M. Mukund, Managing Director, CG Igarashi Motors Ltd.
Reacting to the Exim policy, he said another clear signal of the policy was that the Minister had focused all attention on the non-software sector, and covered all other sectors like agriculture and engineering, in the process giving exports from these sectors a fresh lease of life.
CG Igarashi Motors is a joint venture between Igarashi Electrical Works of Japan and Crompton Greaves. It has a unit in the Madras Export Processing Zone to manufacture permanent magnet DC motors and armatures, with a total installed capacity of 15 million pieces a year.
A clear message from the policy was that "India can do it; otherwise, we will be left behind." The policy itself is quite inspiring, but whether it is motivating or not, time will tell, according to Mr Mukund.
For, a number of players, especially the States, have to act to help transform this into reality.
The policy promises to do away with operational inconveniences, especially with regard to documentation. The text of the policy the Minister is expected to deal with these operational inconveniences. The policy also sends a strong signal to the bureaucrats - do your job to help the exporters do theirs.
